Before known as Oil City , Balikpapan is a fishing village. Words of Balikpapan
is from “Balik” and “Papan”. “Balik” means upside down
or come back
and “Papan” means wood sheets. Balikpapan
names taken by some folklore, one of them is about
a
local king who
threw newborn daughter into the sea. This is
done to protect
the princess from his opponents. The daughter
then tied to
several boards in a lying
position. Due to big waves,
the board upside
down and discovered by a fisherman. Therefore,
the place where the princess found
called Balikpapan.
Birthday of Balikpapan then determined on February 10, 1897. Well, is the first day of the oil drilling conducted by Mathilda Corporation as the realization of cooperation between JH Menten and Mr. Adams of Samuel & Co Firm
When this Balikpapan City no longer

oil from around Balikpapan, namely Sepinggan, Handil, Bekapai, Sanga-sanga,

The origin of the name Balikpapan
Balikpapan is less clear when the
name come from and what is the meaning of that name. Given the wording can be
incorporated into the origin of the Malay language. According to the book by F.
Valenijn in 1724, called a region upstream of a river at a bay about three
miles from the coast, the village was named BILIPAPAN. Separated from the issue
of speech and hearing, it is clear that the name is associated with a rural
community in the bay now known as the Balikpapan Bay.
